Video Post Cards from Hawaii

// June 2nd, 2009 by Leah Lamb

Greetings!
Too much to say, and it’s past midnight! So this evening I leave you with a few video post cards. Enjoy!

We visited Volcanoes National Park today…a dream come true in many ways, it was the first time I have visited an active volcano…and WOW. We even got to walk through a lava tube, a tunnel formed under under ground. It was very Indiana Jones and the Temple of Jones-esque. But this…this was a moment I enjoyed so much it was worth sharing.

This is an image of a crater in the park. You can’t see it in this video, but there are people walking down there and columns of steam coming out of various locations. When I come back…:) I want to go camping down there. The open land is so expansive, the space so fresh and volatile…it’s a bit like walking on the moon. And how ’bout that bird!

A bottle nosed dolphin came to visit for a few moments. They enjoy surfing in front of the boats, and apparently the sounds of our voices….

    Aloha Leah – love your comments and especially like the volcano postcards – for me, a resident on Hawai’i, it often is the little things, sounds, smells, that make this environmental experience so rich. A class in haku lei making was invaluable – finding tiny buds and bits of leaves to wrap into a lei to be worn on the head – taught me the micro view. Too often we see only the macro view of a new place, and don’t get down to the beautiful nuances.
    Another point – some things that are dangerously close to extinction need to be ‘preserved’ which often necessitates no contact by us plodding humans. However, I believe that in most cases, fragile environments, ecosystems and other species are better valued and cared for better with humans in the equation. We, too, are part of the ecosystem, and our intellect and spirit and care can best be brought to beneficial action through familiarity from contact or near contact..IMHO!

    I recently read a very interesting story that isn’t a “green story” but might be thought of that way. Its about a very select group of people who swim between the islands. I’m pretty sure they don’t do this to lessen their carbon footprint of flying. Its more of a personal goal. It is an incredible story none the less. I would love to see an interview or even better a video with some of these people. I read the story in hana hou the in-flight magazine on hawaiian air. Mahalo
