A Google Voice Failure & Community Plea

// Thursday, October 29th, 2009 by Sarah Lane

Yeah, just watch the video and you’ll see what all my fuss is about.

The transcripts only get worse from there, btw. I used my own voice thinking somehow it would work more accurately? Yeeeeeah NO.

The link to my full story on current.com/tech is here.

Once you get done laughing at my misfortune, you might like to watch me create an award from thin air and present it to a deserving website. I DON’T MAKE THIS STUFF UP, PEOPLE.

The Tech Group: Feedback?

// Monday, August 24th, 2009 by Sarah Lane

I often find it challenging to categorize the Tech group, especially within the Current community (one of the most diverse I’ve ever managed). “Tech” means different things to different people, right? It could be web content, or social network news, or some new advancement in in solar energy, stem-cell research, an electric engine…the list goes on. I do my best to weigh each story that comes through the Tech group for relevance and quality. Sometimes the quality’s spot-on but ultimately the content just fits better in the Green group, or the Science group, etc, so groups and tags get shifted around. It’s a case-by-case thing because “technology” is pretty much everywhere now… everyone’s gotta have the tech angle. It’s my job to make sure that given the wide umbrella, when you come to the Tech group you have a pretty good idea of what you’re getting.

That said, I tend to skew “geek culture” when I define tech, probably from my many years spent working in tech and surrounding myself with like-minded people. That’s why I’m loving Current’s new group “Geek Out Culture“! It’s a great place to celebrate the fun side of being a geek. Like, for example, with a Crocheted Raccoon Mario Rug! Nothing technical about a rug, but the content’s still a slam dunk with geeks. We appreciate the effort of it all. Or something. I’m thrilled to have a group that welcomes geeky content with open arms, even if that content isn’t always perfect for the Tech group. Hooray!

Where do you fall under the “technology” umbrella? What does it mean to you? What do you want to see represented more in the Tech group?

Humbly yours,
Sarah
